I woke up this morning at 8:00 a.m. to go for a good long run. We didn’t have to be anywhere until 10:45 so it was a blessing to have a lot of free time to run, shower, eat breakfast, and catch up on my phone calls. After a nice 45 minute jog down by the river I fixed a hearty breakfast of hard-boiled eggs, freshly cut kiwis, and some trail mix. Interesting breakfast isn’t it? I then got my new favorite coffee drink called a long black. They don’t really have regular coffee here; instead it is espresso. The long black is a double shot of espresso with water, which tastes very similar to our regular coffee. We then ventured as a group to visit the office of Fluor Corporation.
Fluor is one of the world’s largest engineering, procurement, and construction management companies. They have offices all over the world and do a lot of what they call “mega projects.” These projects are usually multi-billion dollar projects and are usually absolutely massive in size. The project that we were learning about today is a liquidated natural gas facility located here in Queensland. This a very fascinating project because it deals with cutting edge technology related to changing what types of energy the world uses. To find out more about this project, click here. Natural gas, when in liquid form, is also much easier to transport. Once it is evaporated from a liquid to a gas it can be used again as fuel for a variety of different uses. One such use that I find very fascinating is that of bus fuel. All of the public buses here in Brisbane run on natural gas, which is much cheaper and fuel-efficient.
We then spent the remainder of the day in the library catching up on research for our meetings with our professors the following morning.
Cheers!
